Chicago’s Lakefront: Daniel Burnham’s Vision
Chicago’s lakefront parks were protected from commercial development from the city’s earliest days and provided a key element in Daniel Burnham’s 1909 City Plan, establishing for posterity one of the most treasured aspects of Chicago’s landscape. Saint Mary’s College President Jan Cervelli, FASLA, FCELA, former Dean of the University of Arizona College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture, will discuss how Burnham’s vision of uninterrupted public access along Chicago’s shoreline influenced regional trail systems, neighborhood green space, and protected waterfronts in cities across the nation.
